Supported cameras and lenses

Motion Guard recognises your camera automatically from the image data and takes the crop factor from it — the basis of every camera-shake calculation. This overview lists every device included. Use the search field; the list is far too long to browse.

A crop factor is stored for every camera. It says how much smaller the image sensor is than full frame (36 × 24 mm) — around 2.0 for Micro Four Thirds, roughly 1.5 to 1.6 for APS-C, 1.0 for full frame. The larger the value, the more strongly every movement shows in the image, and the stricter the shake assessment turns out.

The “not supported” marker A few lenses carry this note in the list below. It concerns fisheyes and related projections (fisheye, equisolid, stereographic, panoramic) — around 30 out of more than 1400 in all. They map the world in a fundamentally different way than a normal lens, and the reconstruction's current camera model cannot represent that. Such shots produce distorted geometry. Support for them is planned for a future version of DFX SplatCore. Everything without a note can be used without restriction.

Lenses: what is the list for? The focal length from the image data is enough for the shake calculation. The lens list serves identification and future extensions — a missing lens does not impair the check.

Sensor size: calculated, not copied out The database holds only the crop factor for each camera — no sensor size in millimetres. The Sensor ≈ column is therefore calculated from it: by definition the crop factor is the ratio of the image diagonal to full frame (43.27 mm), and the aspect ratio is assumed to be 4:3 from Micro Four Thirds down and 3:2 above it. The check works out: Micro Four Thirds gives exactly 17.3 × 13.0 mm. Manufacturers do deviate from it by one to two per cent, though — hence the “≈”. The figure is not meant as a datasheet value; for placing the sensor size it is quite enough.

The last column places things — it does not rank them There is no ranking here and no “better” format. What counts for the reconstruction is above all that everything is sharp — and a smaller sensor helps with that: at the same aperture it has more depth of field. What full frame is ahead on in light reserve it largely gives back again as soon as you have to stop down for the same depth of field: Micro Four Thirds at f/5.6 matches full frame at f/11 in depth of field — two stops of light that the larger format then needs on top. On balance the two come out about level. On top of that comes what no table shows: weight, handling and image stabilisation. Anyone who records twice as many usable viewpoints in an hour with a light camera has gained more for the reconstruction than from any sensor advantage.

Camera shake does not depend on the sensor A widespread assumption that expressly does not hold here: Motion Guard calculates focal length × exposure time × crop factor. The safe shutter speed that follows from it is 1 ÷ full-frame focal length — and that is independent of the sensor format. At the same angle of view, a Micro Four Thirds and a full-frame camera get the same time. Only the measurement decides the verdict on your images — the classification in the table is guidance for shooting, not a judgement on your equipment.

Why there is no pixel pitch here Pixel pitch needs the resolution of the sensor — and that is not part of the device database. For more than a thousand cameras it would have to be maintained by hand, alongside the generated list. Two sources for the same question drift apart in our experience, and then one of them is no longer right. As long as the figure does not come from the database, it does not appear here.

Smartphones with per-lens profiles

Smartphones are handled separately. In the image data they often report only incomplete or converted values, and they carry several built-in lenses with very different focal lengths. For these devices, sensor sizes and an individual profile per lens are therefore stored — main camera, ultra-wide and telephoto kept apart.

Your device is not listed?

Then Motion Guard still works — just a little less precisely. Without a recognised model the check calculates with a neutral crop factor of 1.0. That makes the verdict milder than it ought to be: an image that would count as borderline on a Micro Four Thirds camera can pass unnoticed.

The second level of checking is unaffected by this. The measurement on the pixels needs no camera model and no shooting data — it works on any image. So a blurred photo is still noticed even when your device is unknown.

What it usually comes down to Very new models are often not recorded yet. It may also be that your camera writes a different name into the file than the one it is sold under — so search for parts of the name rather than the full designation.

BasicsWhat is the crop factor?

The crop factor describes how much smaller the image sensor is than full frame (36 × 24 mm) — around 2.0 for Micro Four Thirds, roughly 1.5 to 1.6 for APS-C, 1.0 for full frame. The larger the value, the more strongly any movement shows up in the image, and the stricter the shake assessment becomes. Motion Guard reads your capture device automatically from the image data and takes the crop factor from there.

BasicsHow do I get from the crop factor to the sensor size?

The device database holds only the crop factor for each camera, no sensor dimensions in millimetres. The sensor column is therefore calculated from it: by definition the crop factor is the ratio of the image diagonal to full frame (43.27 mm), and the aspect ratio is assumed to be 4:3 from Micro Four Thirds down and 3:2 otherwise. The check works out: Micro Four Thirds gives exactly 17.3 × 13.0 mm. Manufacturers deviate from this by one to two percent — the figure is not meant as a data-sheet value, but it is good enough to place the sensor size.

BasicsWhy does sensor size matter for 3D capture?

What counts for the reconstruction is above all that everything is sharp — and a smaller sensor helps with that: at the same aperture it has more depth of field. Most of what full frame gains in light reserve it gives back as soon as you have to stop down for the same depth of field. Micro Four Thirds at f/5.6 corresponds in depth of field to roughly full frame at f/11. There is no ranking here and no better format. For camera shake the sensor is beside the point: the calculation is focal length times exposure time times crop factor, from which the safe time follows as 1 divided by the full-frame focal length — and that is independent of the sensor format.

BasicsWhat concrete examples show the advantage of Micro Four Thirds?

Two examples with numbers: a Micro Four Thirds camera at f/4 achieves the same depth of field as a full-frame camera only at f/8 — at f/5.6 the equivalent is roughly f/11. For an object that needs to be sharp from front to back, MFT gets there with a noticeably wider aperture — meaning more light on the sensor and shorter exposure times at the same depth of field. That's why Micro Four Thirds is often the more practical choice for object and product photography for reconstruction. Explained in depth in Photography for 3D, Part 5.1 “The Sensor Myth”.

BasicsWhere does this data come from?

The camera and lens data come from the Lensfun device database, which other image editing programs use as well. It supplies above all the crop factors and is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 — usable commercially, with an obligation to give credit and to pass on modifications under the same licence. Additions by Studio Heitzig live in a file of their own and are likewise under CC BY-SA 3.0. The smartphone database with the individual lens profiles is a compilation of our own by Studio Heitzig. The method — how these figures become a verdict — is the in-house development that makes Motion Guard what it is.

BasicsWhat does “not supported” mean for lenses?

This concerns fisheye lenses and related projections — fisheye, equisolid, stereographic and panoramic —, 28 out of 1,460 lenses in this list. They map the world in a fundamentally different way than a normal lens, and the current camera model of the reconstruction cannot represent that. Such shots produce distorted geometry. Support for them is earmarked for a future version of DFX SplatCore. Everything without this note is usable without restriction.

BasicsWhat about the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 8mm f/1.8 Fisheye Pro?

A special case: with fisheye mode turned on, it produces a distortion (equisolid) that Motion Guard can't classify directly. Turn fisheye mode off on the camera, and the same lens delivers a normal wide-angle image suitable for reconstruction. That's why the device list marks it as “conditionally supported”.

Where the data comes from

The device list is made up of two parts of different origin, and that should be stated openly:

The method — how these figures become a verdict, the tolerances per reconstruction method, the pixel measurement and the tripod detection — is the in-house development that makes Motion Guard what it is. The device database is the reference source, not the tool. How the method itself works is covered in the Motion Guard guide.

The device list to download

The same list that is on this page is also available as a file for further processing — as CSV for spreadsheets and as JSON for programs. Both contain cameras, lenses and smartphones with crop factor, calculated sensor size and lens profiles. The CSV starts with three comment lines that begin with a hash sign and carry the licence note.
